[WARNING: James reports (thanks James!) that Rogers charges $0.03 per kilobyte of data if you don't have a data plan. That works out to $30.72 per megabyte, so please be careful when using this information!]
You've finally got your shiny new iPhone onto Canadian soil and have unlocked it via some nefarious method we dare not mention... Then you find that it doesn't work with Rogers EDGE data network. Now what?
As luck would have it the changes required are very simple. From the Home Screen, select Settings | General | Network | EDGE, then input the following information exactly:
APN:
internet.com
Username:wapuser1
Password:wap
Provided you already have a(n outrageously priced) data plan, the settings above will get you online with Rogers EDGE. Coincidentally, these same network settings that can be used across many other wireless devices. As an example, I've used them with my BlackBerry as an untethered wireless modem using Bluetooth. I'm going to experiment with the iPhone to see if the same can be accomplished -- more to come.

Can the iphone access Edge with a Pay as you go account, or must one have a data plan with Rogers to use the internet outside of wifi hotspots?
2 dennis // Dec 7, 2007 at 12:08 pm
I suspect that pay-as-you-go won't work since Rogers data plans appear to be tethered to SIM cards, but I can't confirm it.
Has anyone else tried?

Also trying to configure my hacked iphone in Canada. All working except EDGE access to at least get my email as on a Blackberry. I used these settings you suggested but I still get a message that I am not subscribed to EDGE. The edge icon appears on the screen though. What more can I try to do?

Johann: Which version of firmware does your iPhone have? Are you able to surf websites using Safari, or is data not working altogether?
9 leah // Jan 7, 2008 at 10:19 pm
i am having the same problem as johann - no edge, no surfing. I tried your suggestion with no luck. any other tips?
10 dennis // Jan 8, 2008 at 2:07 am
leah: Are you positive you have a data plan? Do you have a different phone you could test your SIM card with?
Another thing to check -- if your phone has firmware v1.1.1, there is an "EDGE Fix" that ensures the network info you enter is saved. You can download it from the 'unlock.no' source via the Installer (assuming you have wifi access).

Hey Dennis, I don't have an iphone since they haven't been launched in India (although I have heard of a few people getting the hacked ones from the US). Once they do get here (I think by June or July this year) then I'm sure that I still won't be able to afford it. But if I can get one, I'm checking with u for any doubts on it.
12 dennis // Jan 9, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Roshan: They're definitely neat, but I still haven't decided whether or not I like it better than my Blackberry. The screen is beautiful but smudges easily and kills the battery quickly. There are lots of little trade-offs with it, but overall it is okay.
My biggest issue is probably that as a phone it isn't too great! :)

I'm thinking the same as christian // Dec 16, 2007 at 12:14 pm above. Everything works well with mine. I get it online with the Rogers after using the above settings. I'm thinking they are going to jack up my bill for using it though. Especially since I don't have a data plan that covers a certain amount of data transfer. Can anyone comment???
14 James // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Rogers charges $0.03/kb of data transferred if you do not have a data plan.
15 Steve // Jan 18, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Used these settings and worked perfectly to connect to EDGE on Rogers.

17 dworsley // Feb 6, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Today Rogers started offering unlimited usage for $10
18 btard // Feb 7, 2008 at 8:16 pm
dworsley: no they didn't. as if. not for the iphone anyway, plus, it's $7 and again, it's unavailable for iphone.
19 dennis // Feb 8, 2008 at 12:15 pm
As I understand it, the Rogers 'unlimited' package is for browsing only using approved clients, which sounds a lot like WAP-only to me.
The package is unavailable for Blackberry, and also doesn't include normal TCP data transfers.
Thanks once again, Rogers, for providing garbage service at high prices!

hey, denis. can you help me with the following dilemma?
I want to buy iphone v 1.1.2. for my b-friend for his birthday. currently, he uses rogers blackberry pearl. my concern is: will he be able to receive all his emails and surf internet on iphone with rogers data plan?
thanks
21 Deb // Feb 14, 2008 at 6:21 pm
I've been using a blackberry and just switched to a version 1.1.2 iPhone. The data plan I had for my blackberry didn't work on the iPhone so I had to subscribe for a separate EDGE data plan to have the iPhone receive and send emails, surf the web, etc. I signed up for a 8 MB package for $40/month and used 3 MB (just sending and receiving normal emails) on the first day. Yikes. Guess I'll be switching back to my blackberry.
22 Deb // Feb 15, 2008 at 8:56 am
Apparently Fido has a much more reasonably priced data plan than Rogers. I'm going to check into that before switching back to my blackberry.

Hi I've used the settings before and it worked fine. But today I keep getting an error message that safari can't find the server. any solutions to this? I'm running 1.1.3 firmware
24 dan fred // Feb 27, 2008 at 10:15 am
how can i turn edge off?
25 dan fred // Feb 27, 2008 at 10:18 am
it worked to turn edge on but, on the useage page over 400kb in like one shot. Who nows what charges will be applied. I called rogers to get the 7$ unlimited, they said it will work on the iphone. How can you tell what is free?
26 dennis // Feb 27, 2008 at 11:24 am
Dan: To turn EDGE on/off I use a little program called "Services". You can find it in the Installer (or from Hackin0sh). It also allows you to turn Bluetooth, Wireless, and SSH on/off.
27 dennis // Feb 27, 2008 at 11:28 am
Dan: To answer your second question, you can track EDGE data use under Settings/Usage. Remember though that the totals are cumulative -- if you don't reset them manually (e.g., along with your Rogers billing cycle), they just continue to grow.
That said, I highly recommend that you don't use the iPhone without a proper data plan.

I recently purchased an i phone .I activated thru Rogers.I thought I would try out the "EDGE NETWORK" BIG MISTAKE!!!!

31 ny1999 // Mar 12, 2008 at 10:31 am
If i want to use the wifi, lets say at my school do i still need to activate EDGE from rogers in order to use the wifi????
32 vin // Mar 13, 2008 at 1:56 pm
If I only got on the internet and check email when Im within a WIRELESS )WIFI) network.. will i still be charged data from rogers?
33 dave // Mar 20, 2008 at 4:48 pm
My iPhone works on the EDGE network for all things except sending email. I can check email but can't send it. Do I need to configure an account with the smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com SMTP server? (found that on the rogers website) Anybody have any experience with this?
34 Dan // Mar 23, 2008 at 7:32 am
I just bought an iPhone in the US and brought it back to Canada. I signed up for the following through Rogers:
$30 month for 200 any time minutes, unlimited rogers to rogers (any phone on rogers/fido/rogers home phone)unlimited evenings/weekends, + 12 for call display, name display, enhanced voice mail, & who called. I also added a data plan for windows mobile e-mail: $25 month for unlimited email from certain servers (Gmail) + 4MB of data. This was all on a 12-month contract. I had some issues, with the setup of my numerous email accounts and having my OS X mail freeze up while my iPhone was checking the server: that is why I opened up a Gmail account. Things are working just fine (sort of). I had a little trouble browsing from the edge network, because when I signed up for the data package, the agent forgot to tell me there are special settings. DENNIS - THANK YOU! your settings worked just fine.

If you have an iphone in canada and are using rogers and dont have a data plan and have an internet block on your phone, wouldnt you be able to use the wifi on the iphone for free? and if you are charged you could probaly fight the bill considering you have an internet block.

I am thinking about buying the Iphone but have so much that I am confused. If I do not take a data plan from Rogers would I still be able to access internet via wifi. secondly is the unlocked version 1.1.4 able to access the web through Rogers network i.e. after I subscribe to a data plan.
43 applephones.ca // Mar 29, 2008 at 7:24 am
Hi guys, I would use the wifi - you won't be charged to use wifi on the apple iphone - the edge is good for slow browsing, maps, mail etc. - however if you are downloading songs, browsing web sites, playing online games etc then I would definitely not use edge - there are many wifi hotspots throughout canada - the iphone has an automatic detection built in so that it will notify you if there are any open wifi spots wherever you go - I've found some in places I'd never imagined having wifi - I just came back from vacation in Mexico with my iphone and was able to use it almost everywhere through wifi. If anyone has any questions please email me.
