I Can’t Believe It Worked
Even if the night was to be a total failure, at least I could have said my earlier timing prediction was close. The northern lights really started flying around 11:15pm, only 30 minutes off.
The best part is that I’m finally getting a handle on the massive variety of manual settings on the Nikon D70. I shot last night completely in manual mode. I used my new ML-L3 remote control and long exposures to get some pretty cool effects.
I also learned a valuable lesson about lens fog in cold weather — you can see some circle artifacts on several of the pictures because I didn’t think to check the lens before hitting the remote.
The star trails shot was one of the first I took, and it made me a little too happy for a guy standing around in a freezing field.

Oh, these are stunning photos! Great job, babe! :)
Thanks! :)
Well done! I admit, I didn’t have the patience or the fotitude to stand out in the cold and dark and mess with the settings on my 300D. I’m happy just to enjoy your photos though. Thanks for sharing them!
My dad just bought himself a digital SLR (Canon digital Rebel) and I’m so jealous of you both. One of my favorite techniques with my Canon G2 is to use the “portrait mode,” frame a headshot with max telephoto and force the flash. Bonus if the subject is back lit. The depth of field is nice and the flash softens the shadows of the face and adds specular highlights to the eye. I even like photographing my dog using this method.
But I’m sure everyone knows about this. It’s exciting to me because I’m still such a photo noob. Anyway, thanks for the pictures.
Photography is addictive and often expensive, no question about it. I’m not positive, but the first camera I ever bought was in 2000 or 2001. The D70 was a purchase I delayed for a long time, but have been very happy with.
BTW, your gallery is nice. I particularly like this shot.
Northern lights
Some very impressive aurora photos. I doubt we’ll get much aurora activity here in Maryland, but I’d love to experiment with astrophotography if I can muster the patience.

Some impressive digital aurora photos. And some more here. I doubt we’ll get much aurora activity here in Maryland, but I’d love to do some sky photography with my Canon 10D. If I can muster the time and patience.
You bugger. You’ve definitely one-upped me. THREE TIMES this past week I’ve had the lights wink out on me as I’m setting up my tripod. Talk about frustration!
I wanted to see that so much, but could not see anything , mainly because we are surrounded by trees.
Those pictures are cool. I did not know they were an erie green.

Gorgeous!
