Firebird Firefox Spell Checker
Update: If you’re using Firefox 0.9.2, 0.9.3, or 1.0 Preview, use Spellbound. It is far easier to install, much more reliable, and works beautifully.

Mozilla “Firefox” v0.8 (formerly Firebird) has been released, but not without some problems: Some people have had issues with themes, some with the installer itself, and still others with the Firebird Spell Checker solution.
Thanks to some extremely helpful work from Andrew Stevens at blogipity, we’re back in business with the spell check and Firefox. I hope I’m not stepping on toes, but I’m going to reprint his installation instructions (my comments in italics):
- Make a copy of the “composer.xpt” file in the Firebird components directory. (Note: This is where I had a problem since I uninstalled Firebird prior to installing Firefox. For the sake of simplicity, Windows users can grab the composer.xpt file from here that I pulled from the Windows Firebird 0.7 package).
- Uninstall Firebird (if you haven’t already!)
- Grab the stuff you want from your old profile, bookmarks, etc., which is still labelled Phoenix, and then delete the profile. (This is probably going to be stored in “C:\Documents and Settings\[your_username]\Application Data\Phoenix” for Windows users).
- Install Firefox, but don’t start the program after the install.
- Place a copy “composer.xpt” into the Firefox/Components directory. (Again, for Windows users, this will likely be “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components”).
- Start Firefox.
- Install spellcheck.xpi.
- Shut down Firefox.
- Install fromspellcheckerfe0_4_0.xpi. (Andrew notes that there is a copy of composer_xpt_1_6b.xpt here, but I haven’t tested this version).
- Shut down Firefox.
- Start Firefox.
Enjoy, and again, thanks to Andrew for his great help.
If you’re using Firefox v0.9, please see Andrew at blogipity. It seems that each successive version of Firefox breaks the spell checker, but once again Andrew has come through with the answer.

Dennis,
No problem about reprinting my instructions, and thank you for adding some good, extra commentary to my rather sparsely worded steps. I might just have to lift those and put them on my site ;)
Two things:
1. I noticed that the a thread on the Mozillaziine forums covered this issue, and it looks like you can install the composer.xpt file after running Firefox and, at least from what I read, that there is no need to wipe your old profile.
2. I read on the same forum version 0.3.5 of the spellcheck xpi is actually the most current version, and that 0.4 version was more of an experiment that has been abandoned (although, as you note, it still works fine).
From the look of things on Mozillazine, there are a lot of strange problems cropping up. :(
Firefox has been a bit wonky for me too, but I have worked out most of my bugs. The themes had me flummoxed for the better part of a day; the old ones were not compatable with toolbars, and the Back/Forward buttons. The documentation is somewhat lacking.
Yesh, I’ve gone back to 0.7 too. 0.8 is just too unstable for me right now.
I’d like to keep the faith; but I have to use a browser daily for my work :(

Hi, I used your advice to install the spell checker for Firefox 0.8. If I right click on text I can check the spelling, but, I don’t see a button for the spell checker at the top of the browser. AM I missing something? Thanks, Steve
There is no toolbar button for the spell checker, unfortunately. You need to invoke it by right-clicking on the text box you want checked.
Unlike IESpell, the Firebird spell checker doesn’t check all text boxes on a given page — only the one you right-click on.
Thanks for the how-to. This is one of the bits of IE that I really liked, and really missed.
Looks like this works.
Thanks very much.
(Google lists you as the first site when you search on Firefox Spell Check.)
Back to square one with 0.9
I’ve gotten the spell check extension working with 0.9. You can read a detailed step-by-step of how I set it up.
Awesome! Thanks, Andrew!
I just surfed in this great place. But its really a pleasure being here. Go on
with this good work.
I enjoy reading through this informal place. I will surely visit you again to see if anything new appears on it.
Good luck for the future.
