Dear Paul Cellucci…
Fuck you, pal. How’s that for short-term strain? Did arrogance just trump my Canadian politeness or what?!
This power-play horseshit is absolutely tired. I’m not sure what the hell is going on in Washington; maybe Paul Wolfowitz is running the show for real. Why don’t you generate a list of countries for an ‘Axis of Autonomists’? The last thing you want is some “country” failing to fetch your paper on command.
It makes me absolutely ill that I’m writing an entry about this. You’re an Ambassador? You’ve lived in Canada for how long? Maybe you need to do some light reading on Canada, and jog your memory a bit.
By the way, stop with the goddamn card references. War is not a game.

Nothing like overgeneralizing the facts…as an American, I’m relieved that Canada isn’t in the “Coalition.” It’s not because I wouldn’t want Canada’s support if, let’s say, this had gone through proper channels and real diplomacy hadn’t worked out…but I’m pleased for the countries who refuse to cave in to the bullying of the current U.S. administration. This whole thing with the “with us or against us” crap is ridiculous.
Terrifying but true — Wolfowitz is the man behind the curtain. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Well, now it’s Canada’s turn to get stupid — http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/03/26/libscellucci030326
It turns out that some Parliament members had a reaction similar to mine; they’re talking about ejecting Cellucci as an Ambassador.
There’s no way Cellucci should have said what he said (even if it came right from the top as the CBC reported tonight), but ejecting him is downright ridiculous.
It isn’t any great secret that Bush and Chrtien aren’t best friends. Bush shunned Canada by excluding Canada from his list of 9/11 supporters. Chrtien publicly endorsed Gore. Bush accused Canada of everything under the sun short of training terrorists. A Liberal MP called Bush a moron, etc., etc., etc. Grow up.
The worst part of it is that people are being influenced by this bickering.
And many of us Yanks are embarassed by the heat our government and right wingers are giving your country. Well said.
Many of us Yanks are equally embarrassed at the heat our government is giving your country. They do not speak for us all, by any means.
I used to think that the “us against them” business was just a political spin to get administration policies in place. Now I fear that they actually believe the rhetoric.
Canada and the US share an enviable cross-border trade relationship — we are our own largest trading partners. I shudder to think how far things will be pushed because some back-bench liberal MP called Bush a ‘moron’.
Someone commented to me today about Canada’s natural resources (lumber, oil, fresh water) and how the US needs them. They eluded to a scenario where Bush would take them by “any means necessary”.
I took it as a tongue-in-cheek joke, but really, that’s the kind of foreign policy reputation being built. Frightening.
i totally agree. americans suck ass. ok i live in the us. but i’m moving to paris as soon as i finish college… which is in like nine years….
I don’t think Americans suck; don’t get me wrong. My problem is with the Bush administration.
